Proud

Here I am in Calgary again. This visit is alot different.
First off, its minus something degrees outside.
Second, Jordan Parker resides here now.

Jordan Parker

You know that feeling you get when your standing in the bleachers at a hockey game watching your kid and he scores a hat trick. Go ahead, admit it, your proud with joy.
Unfortunately I don’t have any kids yet so I don’t know what that feels like but I do have a great friend named Jordan whom I am mighty proud of as if I were in the bleachers.

Not even a year ago Jordan was sitting in my apartment beside himself. He lost his first job in finish carpentry and didn’t know what to do next. I cant say I was all that worried when he was sitting there in despair; if you have seen Jordan’s work, you wouldn’t have been worried either.

Not even a year later, he has moved to Calgary with his friends Dale and Shaun Smith to work. He owns his own Finish carpentry business, has a beautiful house and is loving life.

I hate that talk about getting ahead or being well off. Those aren’t the reasons I am proud of him. I am more proud of the fact he did something alot of should. Think and dream outside of the box.

Talking with Jordan now you can feel a sense of belonging. Calgary is his new home and with it comes new dreams and responsibilities. “I get up every morning and excited to work… I wouldn’t even call it that. It cant be work when it just feels so natural. I get up every morning smiling as I go to “work.” I enjoy every minute of it.”

Cheers Parker.

In other news, I am also visiting with Chaps in Calgary this weekend; its his 23rd B-Day. When I come back to Calgary next weekend we’ll hit up the hills of Banff and “shred the narr.”

Being broke and helping charities.

There seems to be an assumption that the only way that people can help a charitable cause is by donating money. While I’m not saying that these organizations wouldn’t mind the doe-ray-me and are almost always in need of extra cash, there are still ways that you can help without spending any money.

Donate Your Time:
While this may seem obviously to a lot of people, many don’t ever consider this option. There are all types of functions that need to be done to keep the charity going and most would love any volunteer help they can get. Simply call the charity and ask if there is something that you can do to help out.

Donate Your Skills:
Less obvious to many is that you may be able to donate a skill that you have to the charity. I have a good friend that helps one small charity that he likes help keep their books in order since he is an accountant. I had a friend in college who created art work for free to help campaigns a local charity ran. I have another friend who is a handyman that does all the repairs a local charity needs on their building for no cost. If you have a skill, ask the charity if they could use it.

Make A Video:
If you have a digital movie camera, consider making a video detailing why you like the charity and load it up to a shared video site like youtube where others can see it.

Get A Credit Card:
More and more charities are offering branded credit cards. If you use these credit cards, the charity gets a small percentage back on the amount you spend (just like a cash back card, but the cash goes to the charity instead of you). Just make sure to pay off your balance each month.

Create A T-Shirt:
if you need a basic T-shirt for working out or other activitys, consider making your own that advertises the charity instead of getting a plain T-shirt at your local clothes shop. Sites like cafe press will allow you to create your own T-shirt that can help publicize your favorite charity.

Sell Goods For Charity:
If you have old stuff lying around the house, consider selling it on eBay and having the income generated go to the charity of your choice. eBay has a system that allows you to do this called Giving Works. Not only do you help the charity with cash, you can still deduct the amount donated off your taxes.

At the end of the day though, cash is probably always the best way to go. So stop spending so much and give it away!!!!!

Its good to be bad.

The next time someone tells you that one of these following things is bad or wrong for you; hit them with the positive factsl.
Here is your top ten list of legit excuses!!!!!

# 10 Beer
The newest bad kid on the block, beer has long been overshadowed by its healthier alcoholic cousins. Although there’s still that beer gut to worry about—new research has suggested that moderate beer intake can actually improve cardiovascular function. Now if only a scientist will discover the health benefits of chicken wings. Heaven.

# 9 Anger
If you’re one of those people who tends to bottle things up, only to explode … don’t hold it in so long. Studies show that bursts of anger here and there are good for the health, and can be an even more effective coping mechanism than becoming afraid, irritated or disgusted. Of course anger is best in moderation: stay angry for long periods of time and you’ll be plagued with a host of health issues, like blood pressure, sleep disorders and lung damage.

# 8 Coffee
Java is one of the most debated substances around. Is it good for you? Is it bad for you? Both? The consensus, now anyways, seems to favor those who enjoy their morning jolt—unrelated studies claim coffee is a major source of antioxidants in our diet and can help lower your risk of diabetes. Something in the beans is also thought to ease the onset of cirrhosis of the liver and pancreatitis, good news for those who like to party hard all night before their morning caffeine boost.

# 7 LSD
As much as I am not in the business of advocating drug use, check out this interesting science: In heavy drinkers, small doses of LSD have been thought to help bypass the rock-bottom stage of alcoholism and prevent relapses. These studies (although some decades old) were done in closely monitored, clinical settings; many patients haven’t had a drink in the many years since. It’s an interesting finding that needs a lot more investigation, and not a remedy that should ever be tried at home. Meantime—and this may come as no surprise—a recent study of 36 volunteers who took an LSD-like drug in a lab setting had them reporting mystical experiences and behavior changes that lasted for weeks.

# 6 Sunlight
Exposure to the sun’s rays is necessary to survive, but can also kill you in gross, cancerous quantities. Asthmatics, at least, could benefit from measured doses of ultraviolet rays, according to scientists. Sunlight suppressed the immune reactions that cause asthma in some lab studies with mice and could be used to treat humans afflicted with the disease in the future. And sunlight—even if indirect, such as on a shaded porch—is known to boost the mood. Extra sunlight can help office workers avoid afternoon drowsiness, a recent study found. There’s still no excuse to head outside and bake, however.

# 5 Maggots
They’re creepy, slimy and altogether nasty but maggots can save your life. These squirmy larvae are science’s newest wonder-cure and were approved in 2003 as the Food & Drug Administration’s only live medical device. Placed on serious wounds, maggots mimic their “wild” lifestyle and munch on bacteria and dead tissue, stimulating healing and helping to prevent infection.

# 4 Marijuana
It’s medicinal, I swear! Marijuana, often associated with memory loss, is ironically now being hyped as a way to stave off the ultimate form of memory loss—Alzheimer’s. Recent studies on mice suggest that anti-inflammatories found in the drug prevent the clumping of brain proteins, one major cause of the disease. So when should you start preventative therapy? We suggest waiting for the human studies to wrap up.

# 3 Red Wine
A crucial ingredient in the diets of the world’s heart-healthiest populations (like those damn French) red wine has long been known to have potent anti-cancer and artery-protecting benefits. The key, some studies indicate, is an antioxidant found specifically in the skin of red wine grapes, called resveratrol. The latest studies even link resveratrol to greater endurance, a reduction in gum disease and Alzheimer’s. White wine, which is fermented after the skins are removed, is less beneficial according to some studies.

# 2 Chocolate
Chocolate lovers rejoice: study after study lately has touted the magical benefits of the indulgent treat, which is packed with the antioxidant flavonols that prevent certain cancers and keep your arteries from clogging. The most recent news? These powerful chemicals may even increase blood flow to the brain, warding off dementia. Just stick to the highest cocoa content possible—the bars packed with sugar don’t help your health one bit.

# 1 Sex
Scientists have found that the benefits of sex go beyond immediate, ahem, gratification and satisfying the goal of procreation. Besides the obvious evolutionary purposes, we can all take pleasure in the news that having sex is an easy way to reduce stress, lower cholesterol and improve circulation throughout the body. As if you needed another excuse.
