If American, why I would have voted for Obama

There is a lot of hype right now and a lot of band wagon supports regarding the recent Presidency of Barak Obama. The way in which I have displayed my American Patriotism would suggest that I might indeed be an “Obama Band Wagon Junkie.”

As a Canadian, I have what some people might perceive as an odd obsession with America and they would be correct with that statement. I do love America but not the one you see today.

I was an immigrant. I became a Canadian citizen in my teens so I have developed a passion about what it means to own your citizenship and I do not take it lightly.
Growing up in England my family would have been placed in the category of “poverty line.” My parents both worked very hard and tried as they did to raise 3 kids. In the 80s, England entered a recession and my Dad found himself on the brink of unemployment and with running his own business, on the brink of bankruptcy.

My parents were lured to North America, as many Immigrants are, with the hope of a better tomorrow.
Landing on Sarnia, Ontario, Canada was as random as picking a straw out of the hat. The only reason we chose Canada was because we were sponsored by relatives. We could as very well been American as we are Canadian.

Once here, Canada did not offer a hand out, yet the promise of “if you work hard you can achieve.” My parents displayed great courage as they believed in this mentality and they worked around the clock performing the oddest of jobs to make ends meat.

Like many Americans and Canadians we were at one point an immigrant. Immigrants know first hand the fruits of a better tomorrow that can only be achieved through commitment, sacrifice and hard work.

For me, Barack Obama breathes new life into the idea of the promise of a better tomorrow through hard work, commitment and determination. America isn’t easy and you have to want it. America isn’t about hand outs but about opportunity that if you want to make something of yourself; it can provide that door.

Obama didn’t win this election because he presented a 3 point plan for making everyone millions and for making America the dominant factor in the world. I believe he won the election because he reminded people about the idea of “America.” For me, Obama has the opportunity to restore the hope that America is a beacon for freedom, change and a better tomorrow for everyone.

Obama faces many challenges in the future as it is un-certain one. I do believe that although the future will be a rough one, we at least, will embrace it together not as a republican or a democrat, but as Americans.
